STANDING SILENT NATION

The public is invited to attend a viewing of the documentary film "Standing Silent Nation", which first premiered on PBS in 2007. When the Oglala Sioux Tribe passed an ordinance separating industrial hemp from its illegal cousin, marijuana, Alex White Plume and his family glimpsed a brighter future. Having researched hemp as a sustainable crop that would grow in the inhospitable soil of the South Dakota Badlands, the White Plumes envisioned a new economy that would impact the 85% unemployment rate on the Pine Ridge Reservation. They never dreamed they would find themselves swept up in a struggle over tribal sovereignty, economic rights, and common sense. For more info on the film, go to http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2007/standing/about.html.
The viewing will be held Wednesday, April 15th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Antrim Grange Hall. Following the hour long DVD, there will be discussion on industrial hemp and where the current legislation stands. Also, variety of hemp products will be displayed and some hemp food snacks will be served.
